Every week, thousands of people across Ireland fill out their Lotto tickets, dreaming of the life-changing moment when their numbers come up. But how do you actually choose your numbers? Should you rely on birthdays, lucky numbers, or pure chance? While every draw is completely random, the way you pick your numbers can influence how much of a prize you might end up sharing.

Birthdays – the sentimental favourite

One of the most common ways to pick Lotto numbers is by using meaningful dates: birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions. It feels personal, and the numbers are easy to remember. But there’s a catch – dates only go up to 31, and months to 12. That means many players choose numbers in the lower range.

In the Irish Lotto, where numbers go up to 47, this leaves the higher numbers less popular. If a draw happens to include several high numbers, there’s a smaller chance that many others picked the same combination – and that could mean a bigger share of the jackpot for you.

Random picks – the statistically neutral choice

From a mathematical point of view, every combination has exactly the same chance of being drawn. There are no “lucky” or “unlucky” numbers. That’s why many players let the computer do the work with a Quick Pick. It removes personal bias and avoids patterns that people often repeat without realising it.

Studies of lottery behaviour show that Quick Picks don’t win more often, but they do tend to produce more unique combinations. So if you do win, you’re less likely to have to split the prize with others who chose the same numbers.

Patterns and systems – when logic meets luck

Some players like to look for patterns in past draws, tracking which numbers appear frequently or which ones haven’t shown up for a while. But in a truly random draw, past results have no influence on future ones. A number that hasn’t been drawn in months isn’t “due” – it’s just as likely (or unlikely) as any other.

There are also system entries, where you cover multiple combinations at once. This increases your chances of matching some numbers, but it also increases the cost. For those who enjoy the maths behind the game, it can be fun – but it doesn’t change the fact that the outcome is still random.

Avoid the most common combinations

Even though all number sets have the same odds of winning, some choices can affect how much you take home if you do win. Sequences like 1-2-3-4-5-6 or neat patterns on the ticket are surprisingly popular. If one of these ever came up, the jackpot would be shared among thousands of players.

So it can pay to pick numbers that look a bit messy or random. It won’t increase your chance of winning, but it might increase your share if you do.

Play for fun – not as a strategy

No matter how you choose your numbers, it’s important to remember that Lotto is a game of chance. The odds of hitting the jackpot are extremely small, and no system can change that. The best approach is to play for entertainment, not as an investment.

Set a budget you’re comfortable with, enjoy the excitement of the draw, and treat any win as a bonus rather than an expectation.

Finding your own approach

There’s no single “right” way to pick Lotto numbers. Some people enjoy using personal dates, others prefer total randomness. The key is to choose a method that feels fun and meaningful to you.

Perhaps that’s what makes the Lotto so captivating – the mix of hope, imagination, and chance. Even though the numbers are drawn at random, it’s only human to look for patterns and to dream that one day, your own numbers might just be the lucky ones.
